I thought that meant you couldn't use a laptop system restore cd to install on a different machine - as it installs hardware specific drivers etc. Subject to getting a standard XP install disk, you can install it on a laptop, but it won't install all the drivers for that machine's mobo etc.

I'm worried when i'm coping it it won't see the mbr.. will i have to ghost it over? (xp on the main pc) but i'll just insert one fresh empty 3.5" hdd when installing (mandrake 9.1). The best possible way would be to install the laptop's hard drive without the Windows XP hard drive installed, if possible.

I could still finish the install on the laptop because I could share the Windows 98 SE update CD from my other computer. Unfortunately, it won't work in reverse--no CD drive in the laptop. What's the workaround? Can I just try to copy the CD to the hard drive and run setup from there? Thanks.

Windows 98 Install On Laptop with No CD-Drive?
The install routine has to be written to allow it to install from that partition on the hard drive to the primary partition, so when you try to install from CD, the path won't be correct. _ , is there a way to extract all theses? I want to copy to a cd and do a clean install on the laptop. Thanks, Dan.

Any pointers to a how-to or info that may help would be appreciated. two possibilities come to mind: 1) check out loadlin - which is a linux loader that runs under windows and is used to boot a linux kernel from a running windows system. it won't shut windows down properly though, of course.

First, if you are getting into a loop while trying to do a repair install, you may have more significant issues than simply a corrupted HD. You may benefit from trying to figure that out before going to the trouble of saving your files, and reinstalling Windows...only to find that Windows still won't work.

I have a boot problem?
Laptop installs tend to be the most customized and chances are good that an XP install that is customized for laptop brand X won't work for a brand Y laptop. PC Workstations and Notebooks Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 or 2" I wonder just what the difference is as far as applications are concerned?
